Another book review from Bug!
Book Title: It’s Not You
Author: Ramani Durvasula, PhD
Genre: Psychology/Self Help
It’s Not You by Dr. Ramani Durvasula was a life-changing and deeply healing book that offered invaluable insight, perspective, and validation for anyone who has experienced an unhealthy relationship. Although it has received a Goodreads rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars and an Audible rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars, I personally give it a full 5 stars because of the profound impact it had on my life.
My favorite aspect of this book was the identification of unhealthy relationship patterns and behaviors through a compassionate, nonjudgmental lens. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all advice, it acknowledges that every person’s situation is unique. The book provides practical guidance for navigating the balance between peace and chaos within relationships while helping you to better understand your experiences through meaningful context and explanation.
If I had to choose a favorite “character,” it would be myself and my daughters. Throughout the book, it often felt as though our stories were being told. The experiences, pain, confusion, and lasting impact of an unhealthy relationship were reflected in its pages. At the same time, the book validated the healing journey each of us has undertaken and continues to navigate.
My favorite quote is simply, “It’s not you.” Those three words were incredibly powerful and validating. They put a name to what I had experienced and helped me understand that many of the struggles I faced were not the result of personal shortcomings, but rather the effects of unhealthy dynamics and behaviors.
The one thing I did not like about the book was the difficult reality it highlights: toxic relationships and harmful behaviors do exist. However, this discomfort is also one of the book’s greatest strengths. It teaches you how to recognize these patterns, respond to them effectively, and, most importantly, how to set boundaries and protect yourself.
Overall, this book is worth revisiting throughout different seasons of life and relationships. As you grow, heal, and encounter new experiences, its lessons will continue to offer fresh insight and understanding. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking clarity, validation, healing, and the tools to build healthier relationships.
